UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Historical Monuments of Mtskheta
Mtskheta, the former capital of Iberia, has some of the most outstanding examples of medieval architecture in the country. Jvari is a sixth-century Georgian Orthodox monastery, listed as a World Heritage site by UNESCO. Located on a mountaintop with a great view of the meeting between Mtkvari and Aragvi rivers it is a rare case of the early Medieval Georgian church that survived to the present day almost unchanged. Jvari is the perfect place for those looking to travel back in time and enjoy the architecture of the Middle Ages.
The Svetitskhoveli Cathedral located in Mtkheta is a masterpiece of the early and high middle ages recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage site. It is the second-largest church building in Georgia, also known as the burial site of the Christ’s mantle. The present cathedral structure was completed between 1010 and 1029 by the medieval Georgian architect Arsukisdze, although the site itself dates to the early fourth century.


UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Bagrati Cathedral & Gelati Monastery
Gelati Monastery and Bagrati Cathedral listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites, both located in the Kutaisi region, the ancient capital of Georgia. Bagrati Cathedral is an 11th-century masterpiece of the medieval Georgian architecture, the cathedral suffered heavy damage throughout the centuries and was reconstructed to its present state through a gradual process starting in the 1950s with major works concluding in 2012. Gelati Monastery, a vivid symbol of Georgia’s Golden Age built by David the Builder in the 12th century, it is a well- preserved complex with stunning original mosaics and wall paintings.


UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Svaneti
Svaneti region is a well-preserved area due to its unique geographical location and is an exceptional combination of mountain scenery, medieval villages, and tower houses. The region consists of several small villages scattered on the slopes of the mountains, among gorgeous valleys. The region is known for its famous Svanetian tower houses, which were erected mainly in the 9th-12th centuries and are included in a list of UNESCO World Heritage sites.
